Rakan Muda is the country’s first and biggest all-encompassing Youth Focal Point. It was established to reinforce family entity and cultivate community awareness among the youths. In addition to that, the establishment of Rakan Muda is meant to nurture values of determination, discipline and integrity among the younger generation. Rakan Muda was designed based on the development of Vision 2020 that is to foster continuous social and economic growth for Malaysia.
The activities organized by Rakan Muda aim to motivate younger generation to build up positive attitudes in an attempt to encourage them to pursue their dreams by providing them with new skills and knowledge. Furthermore, the purposeful and creative programmes are meant to raise youths’ awareness of their responsibilities in nation building. Nevertheless, the core objective of Rakan Muda is to direct the young people towards healthy and productive activities.
In line with Rakan Muda objectives, a logo was created based on the concept ‘Reach for the Stars’. A catchy and motivating motto was also formulated ‘Yakin Boleh’ (translated as Yes, we can!). The stars in the logo represent positive messages - success, achievement and excellence. Coined by the former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Rakan Muda was launched officially on October 1994. Just six months after it was launched, more than half a million Malaysian youths registered as a member to participate in the programmes.
Mahathir coined the concept of Rakan Muda in conjunction with the development of Vision 2020 as there are more than 10 million youths in the country. Since these youths play an important role for the country’s economic future, it is fairly important to guide them since they were young. Unfortunately, surveys revealed that most of these youths lack of drive and motivation to help contribute to the country’s success. Thus, to instill and promote a sense of unity and patriotism among the youths, Rakan Muda was introduced to turn younger generation a national resource.
